Want to help me spread more joy and kindness this year?

Random acts of kindness are awesome, but what if we could be intentional about these acts of kindness, and not let a week (or day) go by when we didn’t share some joy with those around us with kind gestures?

Robyn, a friend of mine from high school, celebrated her birthday one year by committing one act of kindness for each year of her life, all in one day. She had a blast making other people’s day and her tweets about it inspired me to celebrate her birthday with my own acts of kindness that day, too. (Now she has established an organization to help people to do the same.)

The opportunities for kindness are out there, and I have no doubt many of you are taking those opportunities each and every day. But sometimes, we might need a little push, a simple reminder, a kindness assignment. And together we can share a LOT of kindness!

That’s why I am launching Operation Intentional #Kindness.

Each Sunday, here on MomsToolbox, I will post 5 kindness assignments as a part of Operation Intentional #Kindness. Throughout the week it will be our mission (should you choose to accept it) to perform at least 3 of the kindness assignments posted.

These won’t be difficult. And because you’ll have 5 to choose from, I’m sure you’ll find a few that will be a cinch to do.

Then, each week, let me know how it goes. Report back in the comments so we know you’re in and making a commitment to be intentional about kindness.

If you have any of your own ideas of ways to show intentional kindness, please share them so I can add them to our list of assignments.

My Boo turns 4.

Today my 3rd child, Brady turns 4. She is my most energetic and mischievous child(her little brother is quickly following in her footsteps).

Her name is Brady Faith. Brady means "spirited one". And oh, does she live by her name!!

Brady is my lovey then turns back around and does something very mischievous :) I would have her no other way. I love her eclectic style and her enthusiasm to never match.

What kind of year do you want in 2012? So many thoughts swim through my mind. So many ways to live differently in 2012...for a better me.

To always have that child-like wonder. To question the world around me.

Never ceasing to know my God and growing close to him.

"Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments." Deuteronomy 7:9

Always loving the beauty of change.

Not growing inpatient on waiting for His voice.

Celebrate life and all it offers.

To look at each day with new eyes.

We had a great Christmas around here. I hope you had a wonderful and blessed Christmas.

Cheap Toys at Aldi...

I stopped at Aldi a few Saturdays ago and found an aisle full of popular toys. I bought the Barbie Auto Glam for Brady for $14.99 it is on Amazon for $25, not bad !! I picked up a few other things not in the picture, a laser beam Nerf gun, a cheap baby doll for Brady, a remote control car for Shane. They had Thomas the Train stuff and Vtech toys. I was pleasantly surprised and stoked to spend less.

As I sit at the computer, I can hear my two oldest giggling upstairs in their room (they should be asleep) about who knows what. But, I think how long before that moment fleets and the giggles are no more. They grow up so fast and I feel like my time is limited with them. Before you know it, they will be on their own. Ok, I sound crazy, I know. They are still little. But if feels like time is passing so fast. I just want to remember it all.

I love to see moments of my daughter being crafty, using her endless supply of creativity.

I love seeing her little sister following in her footsteps. Moments of sharing and being creative.

Moments of Cullen expressing his LOVE for his trains. How they just innately grow up loving certain things, amazes me.

First moments. Her first dance lesson. I couldn't wait to dress her up in her dance attire and neither could she. But she has no interest in going back, she just likes the outfit. LOL.

Moments of strength. Shane realizing that he is a good swimmer and finding his niche.

Moments of sharing and working together. I love seeing them work together (without fighting) for a common goal.

Moments of brotherly/sisterly love. She builds it and he plays with it.

Moments when we don't have it all together.

Caramel Pumpkin Oatmeal Bars

Caramel Pumpkin Oatmeal Bars are my favorite fall treat. Here is the recipe. Enjoy.

Ingredients:

2 cups flour

2 cups rolled oats

1.5 cups firmly packed brown sugar

1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice

1 teaspoon baking soda

.5 teaspoon salt

1 cup butter, melted

1 cup canned pumpkin

7 oz. caramels (unwrapped- 1/2 of a 14 oz package)

2 tablespoons milk

1. Mix flour, oats, sugar, pumpkin spice, baking soda and salt in large bowl.

2. Add butter, stir until mixture is well blended and forms coarse crumbs. Reserve 1/2 (about 2 1/4 cups) for the topping.

3. Add pumpkin to remaining mixture in bowl.

4. Stir until well blended.

5. Press evenly into greased foil lined 13 x 9 pan. Set aside.

6. Microwave caramels and milk in medium microwaveable bowl on high 2-3 minutes or until caramels are completely melted, stirring after every minute. Let stand one minute (not any longer than that, will start to harden and can't spread it well).

7. Pour over pumpkin mixture in pan, spreading to within 1/2 inch of edges.

8. Sprinkle with reserved crumb mixture.

Bake in preheated 350 degree oven for 30-35 minutes or until light golden brown. Cool in pan on wire rack. Lift from pan, remove foil. Cut into bars. Enjoy.

This is my kind of picture day. A day out in the woods with the kiddos and a bunch of pictures. I am sorry, I am too cheap to buy the traditional school pictures, so here is my solution. I did it! I did it!! I finished my Bible in 90 Days. I thought for sure I would be a drop-out, but I finished and a few days early. I learned so much and revisited things I had learned previously. It is neat to see how it all unveils when you read it right through. I loved, loved, loved this program and I implore ALL of you to try this. It may seem daunting at first, read the bible in 90 days as if, but it is so doable. I am so glad I stuck with it. Try it, you must!!

When your 40...

Well, since I turned 40 it was time for that rite of passage....The Mammogram.

This was my second mammogram. I had a mammogram at 35 for some breast irregularity, but it came out negative.

Now, that I am 40, it was time to have a "screening" mammogram. Am I really that old??

Anyway, I thought it was pretty appropo that I had this done during this month, October.

I remember the first mammogram being a cinch, but this one really hurt, ouch!!

But, I am glad I got it done. The results I will have soon.

Make sure to check the Ta-Ta's, it could save your life.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Don't forget to do your monthly Self Breast Exam and keep current with your Mammograms...it can save your life.

The family and I took a little trip to an apple orchard today. We had some yummy cider and donuts. Bought a few embellished caramel apples and some apples, of course. I bought a bag of Honey Crisp and MacIntosh. So, now onto the baking.

That day, I don't want to forget or choose to forget. I tried, but the images, they bring it back so vividly. We remember, will always remember the devastation, agony, chaos and loss on that day. We will remember the heroes, many that lost their lives to save others. We remember.

Times of impact: 8:46 a.m. and 9:02 a.m. Time the burning towers stood: 56 minutes and 102 minutes. Time they took to fall: 12 seconds. 2819 dead from 115 different nations. 343 Fireman/paramedics, 23 NYPD, 37 Port Authority officers. I WILL NEVER FORGET 09-11-01

First Day Of School

The first day of school for Abbi (5th grade) and Shane (2nd grade). We are still waiting to hear if Brady got into preschool (we are on the wait list). I hope and pray she gets to go to preschool this year. The poor girl had her backpack on this morning and stated she was ready to go to Preschool!!

Let's Choose Review and Giveaway

Let's Choose is a company that developed a game to address children in social skills and behavior management. This game was the brain-child of Lisa Maylee and Stacey Buck. These women have vast amounts of experience with children of all ages. They believe that children in a variety of age groups could benefit from a teaching tool that aids in the outcome of different behaviors experienced throughout life.

The game can be played with a child individually or in a group. Using the 20 choice and 20 consequence cards in the parents version and 21 choice and 19 consequence cards in the school version, children can match each choice with a variety of possible consequences. Most excitingly played as a game show, the cards can also be used to role play, as a memory game or as story starters.

Ultimately, families learn to use these cards to improve behavior, social and language skills in real-life situations

Brady and I had fun going through the different cards to discuss various behaviors and their outcomes. We used the special play microphone to talk each scenario out and she loved it. To my surprise she started to model some of the behavior discussed. What an awesome teaching tool!!

Apple Garland

This week for our Bible Study craft we did an Apple Garland. I found this idea from I Can Teach My Child. She always has neat and crafty ideas. This craft went along with the Fruit of The Spirit study we were doing. And I thought it goes pretty well with this time of the year. We changed it up a little bit from the directions.

Instead of contact paper, we used wax paper and crayon shavings. It was a little time consuming, but we had fun making this garland.

I think it turned out pretty cute.

Thoughts In My Head...

As I sit with the windows open and listen to the rain drops hit the grass, I feel the cool breeze come through the window. Opening the window, kind of plays on my symbolic side for a moment. Open the window to my heart and mind, so I can get a better view and feel for what is out there. With my 40th birthday just a few days away, I begin to contemplate. Contemplating what God has in store for me and what I need to change to set my eyes on His path and not mine.

Seeing the leaves on the ground, I know there is a new season that is about to begin. Such as my life, a new season. A season of changes, that is for sure.

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11.

"Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34.

Well, it is day 45 of the 90 Day Challenge!! I am ahead of schedule, whoo hoo! I never thought I would make it this far, let alone to day #2. I am loving this challenge and the mentors keep you in check. I recommend this Challenge to everyone.

A Stroll Around the Neighborhood

The kids and I took a walk by the water last night. It was so beautiful out. We stopped to take a few pics.

Yesterday, they were celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the surgery center's (where I work) opening. They had tours of the OR, free food, bouncy things, face painting and balloon folders.

This is my boss, Julie giving my kids the low down. This is set up for a knee arthroscopy. This is where I work everyday. Pretty cool that the public gets to see the inside of an OR :)

Trip to the Dentist...

Today 3 of the kiddos went to a new Pediatric Dentist. This was Brady's first time to the dentist. I didn't know how she would react to the whole adventure, so I braced myself for a tumultuous time. To my surprise, she was AWESOME!!

Sunday Morning in the Urgent Care

Shane woke up in tears this morning. He tried to put weight on his right foot and was in a lot of pain. He thinks he hurt himself on his scooter yesterday. But, if you know Shane, this kid is constantly hurting himself. He loves to run into things, trip over things and just not watch where he is walking. So, we chalk it up to Shane being Shane.

By the way, I work in the same building as the Urgent Care, so it was like going to work on Sunday. Blah. But, at least he is fine and resting on the couch.

Abbi and her new look....

Abbi has been counting down the days til she could get her contacts. Our stipulation was that she must wear her glasses for one year. I know what a pain glasses can be, I have been wearing them since elementary school, blah. She is 10 and very mature for her age, so yesterday was the day she had been waiting for.

Splash Pad

Yesterday me and the 4 kiddos decided to do some garage sailing (well I decided they had no choice) after that I took them to the Splash Pad. My oldest protested vehemently that she did not want to go!! You guessed it, she had the most fun.

Bible In 90 Days Update.

I started the 90 Day Challenge on Monday and I am loving it. I thought this is going to be hard to fit in, but so far I am ahead of schedule (and I would like to keep it that way).

Our Trip to the Zoo

Our first trip to the zoo as a family. I have always tried to get John there, but he was always very reluctant. But, today was the day. He came along with us. He hasn't been to this zoo since he was little. So, we picked one of the hottest, stickiest days of the year to visit the zoo. I must say it went pretty well. No major melt downs or tantrums. Whoo Hoo.

On my mind...

As I sit and eat dinner with just me and Cullen(the rest of the family went to see Cars 2), I think how fast time is going by. Before I know it, this little guy will be heading off to school and doing all those big boy things. I think how precious these little gifts from God truly are. I am trying so hard to be the mother that God wants me to be. Trying not to yell, snap or fuss to my kids, but to be tolerant in every situation. This is what I am praying for every.single.day, tolerance and patience with my little treasures.

God is the center of this family and I am constantly striving to make sure my children are aware of this. Not just on Sundays, but everyday.

I found this Pearl of Wisdom over at Homeschool Creations:

This morning Shane started singing this song and got stuck on one part of the song. Shane says, "Mom can you play that song on YouTube? I love that song but I can't remember this one part." I loved it. I loved that Shane is singing this song. I loved that he wanted me to find the song for him to sing. I love that we are worshipping Him everyday and my kids know it and embrace it. He Reigns!!

Fireworks!!

Lianne and I took the kids to the Fireworks last night(both hubs took a raincheck on the deal, oh they will pay later). We had the best seat in the house, thanks to Lianne. It was Canada Day and since we live a stone's through away from Lianne's mother land, we are able to see them from the US side. Whoo Hoo!! Awesome fireworks with no muss, no fuss.

We pulled up in the County Building Parking Lot, backed in and let the kiddos watch a movie. Packed lots of goodies galore. Brought them in their PJ's (for when they fall asleep on the way home) and blankies too.

Then it started. There was no walking anywhere. They just sat in the back of the car and watched. There was no chasing anyone, nobody stealing their seats....it was perfect.

Then we put em' back in their car seats and voila, homeward bound with all but the little guy sleeping. A perfect night with good friends and pretty scenery.

Read the Bible in 90 Days??!!

Have you ever started a Bible reading plan? I have. Have you finished it? I haven't. I have started many reading plans and have yet to finish. So, when I saw Mom's Toolbox is having the 90 day Bible Reading Challenge, I knew I would have to sign up. I am a sign up kinda gal.

We will be starting on 7/11 and ending on 10/8. There will be weekly check in's and mentors if you sign up in time. I love this idea of being accountable, this is probably why I haven't finished in the past. Dah!! She is saying to allow yourself anywhere from 1 to 1.5 hours daily to get the Bible reading done. So now is a good time to start clearing your calendar for that alone time with God and dig deep in the Word. I call it my TAWG (Time Alone With God).

Feeling like cooking...

So, I must have had a bit of energy this evening, cuz I felt like cooking/baking. I found out I received a free Red Box Code today so, on my way out I came across a little recipe book from some grocery store?? for Hummus (yummy). Figured out what I needed and decided to pick them up while getting the Red Box. As I was searching in the cabinet for the extra can of garbanzo beans I forgot to buy at the store (dah), I came across a can of Solo Poppy Seed filling. Ding! Hubby found the garbanzo beans, score!! Made some killer hummus and bought some pita bread to go with. Abbi and I ate it up (nobody else likes it). Until we gave some to Cullen, He likes it! He Likes It!!

I am totally all over the place on this one. Anywhoo. After our taco dinner, I noticed we had sour cream left over and I remembered the can of poppy seed filling and I am starting to sound like a Nancy Drew novel, so I thought I would make a Poppy Seed Bundt Cake. You know the recipe on the inside of the label. Funny story there. My husband's Nana always told him she had a very special recipe for her Poppy Seed Cake and one day she wrote down the recipe and gave it to me. Whoo Hooo. I couldn't wait to make it. Then I noticed the label on the poppy seed can peels off and there is a recipe back there, wait! The same exact recipe as Nana's!! Nancy Drew all over again. I broke the news to the hubbs, he could not believe it, but it is still Nana's recipe. They just stole it. Darn Solo people :)

I digress. There was not enough sour cream for my cake tonight, but the hubbs was nice enough to get more. How kind?? Did I tell you this is his favorite and I only make it at Christmas. It felt a little like Christmas today, he he. Did you know that Christmas is less than 6 months away?? Just thought I would tell ya.

I must have had too much sugar today :0. Had a nice night watching Gnomeo and Juliet with the kiddos, cute movie. Now, I am off to bed to brave another day at work (blah). Happy Tuesday (almost) everyone.

Summertime learning...

This summer the kids are working on Summer Bridge Activities. Shane and Abbi have a workbook for each of them. I love these workbooks. It gives them a review of the past year with some new stuff too. It also shows me where they may be a little lacking in some areas. I love how each section has the student list off their goals for the section. Today's Meijer Haul

Today I did a little Meijer shopping. There was a two day sale. I took Brady with me, what was I thinking?? Anyway I did pretty good and scored alot.

Let's break it down. First of all, I want to thank Bargains to Bounty. Without her I would be lost.

The Super Sale was on.

My total of out pocket was $90.20 ( I wish I took a picture!!)

I saved $$77.05

I ended up with a few store coupons after for the total of $17.00

so really my final total was $73.20. Whhooo Hoo.

Oh, and I get 8 ears of corn for free since they were out of it today, but I got my rain check.

Little piece of advice: I carry my IPhone with me (at all times) so when there is crazy deals like the A1 Steak Sauce deal and I know there is going to be an issue. I will take a picture of the deal description by the product to show to the cashier or service desk. This saves time in the long run.

All in all, it was a pretty productive shopping trip.

She is just cute and diabolical all at the same time.

Isn't she cute, beautiful, adorable? Why, yes she is, but she is also plotting for her next debocle. I had just got home from work, a very long day that ended in a screaming match with a co-worker ( we are fine we hugged and made up)!! I just wanted a relaxing evening at home. Little did I know these kiddos had other plans in store, plans that I was not on board with. Crying, screaming, pouting, disobeying and talking back were some of our activities for the evening. Finally I had enough and everyone was going to bed. It was 7:30. So what, they were fed, washed up and I was soooo ready.. The hubs was out running errands, so of course I was here to handle what went down. Brady, after several attempts, spanked and unspanked finally went to bed.

The only time she is really good. Sleeping at the dinner table.

But not to bed a minute later until she showed me this morsel. What the heck??@@!! Oh yeah, it is not a mouse or a turd, it is her hair mixed up with some silly puddy. I tried to untangle, but to no avail. So, the scissors made an entrance and with one snip the culprit was gone and Brady was off to bed or else. This story has not included my 10 yr old crying and whining about her punishment and my 6 yr old talking back, so hefty punishments were given out and I hope this isn't how we are starting our summer vacation.!!??
